Jordon Richards returned to the Town defence after recovering from a broken nose. Dan Childs recovered from a neck injury picked up at Westfields. Adam Creaney missed the match due to family wedding. Yaxley sat one position beneath Town in 4th spot.
The match took place on Yaxley’s excellent 3G surface with the threat of rain in some passing storm clouds which failed to materialise.
There was drama in the first minute when Yaxley goalkeeper Ollie Sutton fell awkwardly after a challenge from Jake Bettles. After lengthy treatment, the keeper was replaced by 17 year old James Blake.
Robbie Parsons won a corner after 10 minutes but it was Yaxley who broke well and Ant O’Connor made a good save going down to his left to push the ball around the post.
Two minutes later and a Robbie Parsons free kick found Tom McGowan, his header from close range was well saved by Blake.
Shortly after and Dan Childs had a header cleared off the line.
Ant O’Connor saved well in the 19th minute when he got down well to a free kick from 25 yards that bounced on the 3G surface just in front of him.
A good spell of pressure in the Yaxley penalty area ended with a Jordon Richards shot in the 21st minute that seemed certain to open the scoring but again it was cleared off the line by a defender.
One minute later and the hosts took the lead somewhat fortuitously with a Liam Hook shot from the edge of the box that took a wicked deflection and left O’Connor wrong footed.
Another deflected cross cum shot only just cleared the crossbar just a minute later.
Town had a great chance to draw level after Kieran Fitzgerald was brought down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Robbie Parsons took the penalty and broke his run up in the hope the keeper would commit himself. The young keeper went down well to his left and got a strong hand to push the ball onto the post and the ball was cleared to safety.
O’Connor was quickly into action again at the other end making yet another good save.
On 38 minutes, Tom Waumsley smashed the ball into the net from close range to put the Cuckoo’s 2 0 up.
Shortly afterwards Robbie Parsons was withdrawn and replaced by Alex Webb.
Town ended the half with a good spell of pressure which ended with a Bettles header that was saved by Blake just under the bar.

Town started the second half well and again appeared to have been denied when Alex Webb blocked a clearance and the ball was destined for the net before being cleared off the line.

A Dan Cotton free kick from the edge of the penalty area in the 71st minute sealed the 3 points for the Cuckoos.
The afternoon ended on a sour note with a red card for Ross Harris after he brought down a striker on the edge of the box, and as the last man, had to go.
For the second successive Saturday, a promising start to the match had ended with a heavy defeat.
